Phil Heath Three-Peats at the 2013 Mr. Olympia

Phil HeathThe 2013 Mr. Olympia took place on September 26 to 29, 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and it was a historical contest to say the least. In the main event, the men’s open bodybuilding was dominated by Phil Heath, who earned himself a third Sandow trophy. Heath was well ahead of the competition during the prejudging and he held his peak into the finals to secure his third consecutive win at the SuperBowl of bodybuilding.

Coming in second and third were Kai Greene and Dennis Wolf respectively. Greene came in slightly off during the prejudging, but regrouped for the finals and stepped onstage with much better conditioning. As for Wolf, he was the biggest surprise of the contest, making significant improvements in conditioning and coming in bigger than he ever has in the past.

The history of the event shows that defending champions are tough to beat. Of the six men who have won the title in almost three decades, four of them have won it at least four times. Heath can make it five of six with another title. Once a bodybuilder gets to the top, it is nearly impossible to knock him off. Many expected this to be the year that Kai Greene knocked Heath off the top of the mountain, but Heath would not hear of it. His dominence looks like it will continue as long as he wants it to. He shows no signs of losing motivation even though he has done just about everything there is to do and has nothing left to prove.
